Adoption Information
Adoption Process
The adoption of a companion animal is a commitment for life. We want to be sure that the animal you choose is the best possible fit for you. We want this adoption to be perfect for everyone. You are free to visit the animals at adoption events or on line. Should there be one who seems to fit your needs based on the pet's biography, ask for more information. If it seems like a good match, you can make an appointment with the pet's foster parent to meet the animal. You may also go for a walk or sit with him at the adoption events to get to know him better. If you have a dog at home and are considering adopting another dog, you may be required to bring your own dog with you and we will facilitate a dog meet between the dogs. This requirement does not apply to all dogs. Although not a guarantee on how the dogs may do together once home, this is another helpful step you can do to make the best decision for both 2-legged and 4-legged members of the family. (We ask that you do not bring any feline members of the family in for meets. This is counter productive and can be very stressful for your cat.) Filling out an Adoption Form is the next step. Our volunteers will review the information with you, helping you to assess whether the animal you have chosen will fit into your lifestyle, family, and home. We encourage you to take plenty of time to make your decision. Maybe the right animal for you isn’t here today. Additionally, all animals adopted from the Humane Society of Lawton-Comanche County will be spayed or neutered and cleared by our veterinarian before being available for adoption, it may be necessary for you to wait a few days before taking your new friend home, although most of our animals are ready to go with you immediately. Before final release, you will be asked to sign an adoption contract and to pay the adoption fees. Please understand that our questions are not meant to be intrusive or suspicious. Our careful approach to making satisfying, lifelong matches can spare your family a painful experience. For the animal, however, it can be a matter of life or death. Each one of our pets has experienced at least one broken bond already. Considering whether it's the right time to add a pet to your home, and if you've found the right one, should be a well thought out and investigated process. Leave time in your day to spend a few hours with us. Please be patient - the animals are depending on us. Adoption Fees
Adoption fees cover spay and neuter (as applicable), full vaccinations (including rabies), heart worm test (if old enough), FELV/FIV tested (cats),microchip (dogs only) and flea/tick treatment. The Humane Society of Lawton-Comanche County does not accept checks. Cash and credit cards are accepted.
